I wonder if anybody could explain this, Eureka in the Canadian High Arctic has record highs between January and April of -1.1, -1.1, -8.0 and -2.8C respectively. climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/results_1981_2010_e.html?stnID=1750&autofwd=1Does this sound legit, firstly Jan and Feb being the same, then March being so far below those two and even April having a lower record high than January and February? How can somewhere at 80N which most of the winter seems to be a consistent -30 to -40 and which is surrounded by ice even get anywhere near -1.1C in the winter? Another thing that sets it apart from most other Arctic places I'm familiar with is that the most of the record highs in winter were set decades ago.

Doesn't Eastern Australia (especially southeastern Australia) have Temperate broadleaf forests? I agree though I would think sydney northwards would be under ''Tropical and Subtropical forests'' ??

Lol. What did he start an argument about? Keeps trying to insist that the cold spell is being hyped up and won't happen, to piss off coldies. He actually likes cold and snow himself, but he thinks cold rampers are stupid, and enjoys winding them up. I don't blame him lol. I'm a member on Netweather (though not posted on there for years) & decided to take a look earlier, fuck me, the usual cold ramping histrionics going on from almost everyone. People saying they are stocking up, asking what to do if their electricity is cut off & how they should keep warm & already lambasting the BBC TV forecasts for not saying 6ft of snow was going to fall right down to the south coast with record breaking temperatures... they are going on as if some sort of 'Day After Tomorrow' cold snap is imminent

Pretty much yeah. TBH even I have to say the depth of cold looks a bit crazy and with some consistency though.

Totally understand why dunno would do this

So Tavelsjö's closest station (about 3km away on the northwestern side of the lake instead of NEN) managed to hit -30'C tonight. Our house is on a ridge so probably not at our house but definitely down in the main part of Tavelsjö. Also, notice how we're finally starting to see a real diurnal range cycle? Man is it nice that this morning it was my GF's turn to go out with the dog

It is, but the way most of them are carrying on is as if absolutely everywhere is going to be under several feet of snow & at least -10C

Well that's the snow starved southern softie for you. They're salivating at the possibility of snow and will pounce like mad dogs at it.

Not just southerners going on like that, I had another peruse on there this morning & still many OTT posts about being snowed in, lagging pipes & getting long life milk stocked up

This is a guy from Bingley, West Yorkshire:
"Staring in utter disbelief at the ukmo 144 chart.
Lump in throat,tears welling.
Better feeling than Having my kids,I won't lie.
If I have a drink tonight,I will at some point burst into tears😂
Overwhelmed or what,sh*t a brick."
Sad or what? I mean really? Here in Buxton the last time we had a foot of snow was only 2016. Nothing special if that happens here.

I moved the past few posts from the dunno thread about the European cold spell coming up into here since they'd gone off-topic As for the guy in Bingley, wtf?! I'm not even expecting anything that amazing here, it's the south where this cold spell looks like being more of a big deal by their standards. I don't bother with the British weather forums because they have no sense of perspective, you only have to go a few hundred miles E/SE of us and what would be an impressive cold spell here wouldn't even register as a normal cold spell there.

I really hope we get compensated for this freeze in the summer with a record hot spell with 35°C in Buxton and 40°C in the south east. A hot August in particular - a month so consistently cold, wet and cloudy in recent years.

I wouldn't mind a heat wave here either with temps above 100 F. It's already hot enough to be really uncomfortable, why not make it interesting?
We had 97 F (36 C) in late April in 2015, so it's possible. We just need a similar set up. Unfortunately, summer is a bit too stable for it to occur. "Extreme" heat happens more frequently in mid/late spring.

I find statements like this (from netweather) to be a bit of a folly.
"This spell is shaping up as being notable for its severity and longevity."
It hasn't started yet. Could still go wrong for coldies.
