Had no idea I'd find such entertainment in the photo thread. My fault for not paying more attention to it.

Just a very quick fall update. Fall colors starting to affect the landscape/treescape in a significant way now.

Climbed Quandary Peak this morning with one of my friends, my 2nd 14er. It’s the 13th highest peak in Colorado and a new elevation record for me. Trailhead elevation: 10,800’ Summit elevation: 14,265’ Distance: 7.2 miles Hiking time: 4 hours 20 minutes My car thermometer said 32 f when I parked in Breckinridge, so was probably in the upper 20s when I started the hike. Way down it was warmer, got to maybe the mid 50s by the time I finished. Got up early and drove to Breckinridge. We parked there and took the shuttle to the trailhead. Got on the trail a little before 5:30 AM so it was pitch black for awhile. < Sun rose a bit after I got above treeline Beautiful light on the peak: < > The beginning stretch wasn’t bad but the ending. Gained like 1300’ in the last little over half a mile. More tiring than Bierstadt as it was steeper and rockier but an easier hike, never needed my hands. Got to the summit at 7:35 AM, took pretty much an identical amount of time going up and coming down even though going down was much easier and I took no breaks then. Summit had nice panoramic views: < > Looking back up at the peak which shows the very steep final stretch: Nice valley Pretty lake and dam, these were in view a good part of the hike: About halfway down, the trail entered an open subalpine forest. Could still see mountains through the trees and it was very peaceful: Aspens are near peak: <

Still looks & feels like summer here. Temps in the low-mid 80s. At least it's not humid and I caught some good wildlife: Saw a wild crane: And then there were 2: Walking on the trail: A muddy creek: Some swans on the lake: Close up of swans: Bird catching fish on the lake:

Was in Saint Louis this weekend. Likely experienced my last 90s of the year while there (91/70 on Saturday) but a big cooldown is forecast in the Midwest. Latest ever 90s here is Oct 6, only 3 Octobers have recorded 90s so it's not unheard of but still extremely rare.
Saw a Catalan nationalist pro-independence flag in St Louis, which is totally random.

Went for a walk this evening, it was slightly less than 20C and relatively windless. The fall colors are nicely out now.

A Riverina Spring....looks pretty, but it is a cursed weed species actually. Paterson’s Curse, Salvation Jane (Echium plantagineum) is a Declared weed throughout Australia. Also known as Riverina Bluebell.

Pics from today. Nice looking tamarack. One of many here. Much better forest to walk through than in Vancouver. I actually like Vancouver's forest a lot better. Yours is more open, which is a plus. Looks more like inland northern California or southern Oregon than what I'd expect near the Canadian Rockies

Looks more like inland northern California or southern Oregon than what I'd expect near the Canadian Rockies It varies quite a bit here actually. Some areas have more open forest and others are more dense. Depends on the topography and precipitation; or if it's near a body of water, it's usually more lush.

That's really fast, especially with the boulders. It took me 4.5 hours to climb the 5200 feet from Paradise to Camp Muir on Rainier, maybe could have done it in 4 hours with less stops. There's a shuttle running at the trailhead before sunrise?

There's a shuttle running at the trailhead before sunrise? Lol. I’ve heard the knife edge on Capitol peak isn’t that bad, mostly just scary. Most people say the hardest part is the scrambling/climbing that comes after it. Was really pretty with the sunrise. Beautiful views anyway but the sunrise lightning was very nice. Not really boulders on this one, didn’t need my hands at all. Mostly walking on talus and there were steps cut out for bigger rocks. Took a bit under an hour longer each way than flat terrain would’ve. I didn’t take any >5 minute breaks so that made it faster. The first shuttle leaves Breckinridge at 5 AM, most people climb 14ers very early so the shuttle accommodates that.
