Despite what many believe and despite our high snow totals, Rochester doesnโt get a constant snowpack all winter.
Average number of days with lying snow since 2000:
January: 20.1 February: 20.7 March: 12.5 April: 1.5 May: 0 June: 0 July: 0 August: 0 September: 0 October: 0 November: 3.3 December: 15.8 Total: 73.9
Record high: 112 days in 1959-1960 Record low: 29 days in 2011-2012
Thatโs snow on the ground about 63% of the time during the winter months.
The longest continuous snowpack is usually just over a month:
1999-2000: 42 days 2000-2001: 38 days 2001-2002: 14 days 2002-2003: 68 days 2003-2004: 57 days 2004-2005: 64 days 2005-2006: 23 days 2006-2007: 54 days 2007-2008: 23 days 2008-2009: 40 days 2009-2010: 42 days 2010-2011: 64 days 2011-2012: 10 days 2012-2013: 21 days 2013-2014: 18 days 2014-2015: 53 days 2015-2016: 14 days 2016-2017: 18 days 2017-2018: 25 days 2018-2019: 26 days Average: 35.7 days
This is the part of our climate I really hate. I love falling snow, but I hate when it sticks around for a month and gets all slushy and brown and ugly and boring.
The longest snow pack on record was 100 says from December 21, 1939 to March 29, 1940.

Yes, the storm is further south. The forecast is intense, I wish I could get a snow like this sometime this winter. Here is the NWS forecast for Montana (weather.gov/tfx) And the text forecast. Let's see if the snow actually meets the forecast. Should be some great pictures and videos if it does.

Wow! Didn't realize things were gonna get that crazy! Yeah, all that's in the forecast for us right now is a chance of flurries this weekend so it doesn't look like it'll amount to much up here. On the one hand this would be a pretty cool storm to experience, on the other hand we already had fairly substantial snowfall (though nowhere near those levels) on the day of the equinox last year, so I kind of feel like I've already had my fill of September snow and don't particularly feel the need to go for round two this year

The snow is starting to fall in Saskatoon. It's not accumulating at the moment but the flakes are relatively large and there's an increasing number of them. Forecast low for tonight is -1C so we'll probably get some accumulation overnight, but at the moment it's 5C and tomorrow's forecast high is 4C so I don't expect too much of a buildup.

This is absolutely insane. Kiruna is forecast up to 40cm snow tomorrow in one September day.

Some locales in extreme SW Alberta could see 100cm once the storm is all set and done tomorrow evening.

Some flakes of snow outside my window.... Average first snow 2005-2018 is 20th of October if you count snow grains, otherwise it's 24th of October. Last year was the earliest snow of the period, on the 3rd of October. Apart from last year this is the earliest since at least 2004.

We've gotten a couple of decent snow dumps in the past week or so that have mostly melted but are also getting occasional light dustings coming down, and with the temperatures now being consistently below freezing those small amounts stick around and add up.

First snow of the season here. Accumulated on yards, trees, and cars. Iโd estimate maybe an inch.
