I haven't gotten around to posting this yet, but last weekend it was maybe the last significant rainfall this season and I felt like hiking Cerro San Luis (locally known as Madonna). The mountain shrouded in fog: At the top it was really foggy and windy. It was probably about 10c but felt colder. Usually, you can see the whole town from there, but not then. It started to clear up as I was climbing down:

Recently visited Twizel which is a few hours drive north of Queenstown. Some nice autumn colour left along the Kawarau River. Crossing Lindis Pass into Canterbury. I always find driving around the south to be a nice change from the never ending green of the north island. Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel. It was -3C this morning and got up to 15C in the afternoon. Twizel is basically the coldest part of the country (although the nearby town of Tekapo is colder again), and I actually remember seeing a nearby station go down to -20C one morning back in the mid 2010s. NZ doesnt collect data on snowfall but from what I've seen I'd say these two towns receive more snowfall than anywhere else in the country. The area is an international dark sky reserve because of the very low levels of light pollution and more frequent clear skies compared to coastal areas. Never seen so many stars before I stayed the night here. Looking across Lake Pukaki to Mt Cook (3724m).

Man I don't mind spring snow, but by now it should've fuck off. Couple pics from today. Pretty warm at 26°C! Auroras were visible in Paris even despite the light pollution. I was pissed off when I read about that this morning. Paths were really muddy, I fell off my bike once to land in a big muddy mess. Of course lots of mosquitos to be found.

Currently visiting family in the Portland metro area, and got some cool pics. From the drive there: Mount Rainier rising mightily above the busy I-5 corridor in south Seattle Went on a hike at the Lacamas lake trail. Was so nice on this 90 degree day 😁 I almost never get to see Mount Hood, but luckily I got a decent view of it from the Lacamas lake trail. Tons of land being zoned off for development in the up-and-coming town of Ridgefield. I'm gonna miss when it was more open and rural.

Today's been about 20'C, warmest day of the year so far in Umeå. I'm leaving Umeå at 05.30 tomorrow and won't be back until next weekend. One tree has started getting leaves now, hopefully birches (and thus most trees) will be green after this coming week of warmish temps.

Back from a short trip. Andorra la Vella, it's a beautiful city. Peculiar, more than 1000m above sea level and it is noticeable that there is a more continental climate than eg Barcelona. Very clean and tidy, no dingy and dilapidated buildings. The town seems bigger than a normal town of 24,000 inhabitants in my opinion. I loved this fast mountain river in the middle of the city:

Pics from SW France near Bordeaux. Showery weather: looks quite unpopulated; more conifers and birches (as you've said) than I expected The region between Bordeaux and the Basque country was mostly heathland (that's basically what it's called in French - the Landes), so sparsely populated for French standards. As for the trees, a huge pine tree farm has been planted in the 19th century in order to make the area "productive".

Well just as I hoped it's gotten really green in Umeå during the time I was up in Lapland last week. Still some snow piles. And even some remaining "usual" snow in heavily shaded areas. Glad summer is finally here. Aspen are still mostly bare, and maples are mostly in bloom rather in leaf, but all other tree species are at least partially green. The newer of our two train stations that opened maybe 10 years ago is pretty neat but I can't for the life of me understand how they could make an entire train station out of glass without equipping it with any form of air conditioning... It's never below 30-35'C in this greenhouse of a trainstation and I've never been able to feel any cold stream of air or hum of an AC outlet. I don't get it. I took a look at instagram pics of Turku and it seems they looked similar to Umeå just a few days ago, guess that's what happens when it's cold for a long time and then a single heatwave brings the leaves for everyone at the same time.

Webcam photo from Tartu central square now. Weather is good, the outdoor terraces of the bars are crowded. A temporary stage has been set up for the concert, it is in the middle.
