2nd ice day in a row by a 0.1'C margin. 0.0'C high, and 0.1'C is the SMHI requirement. We just had two ice days in a row. We matched! Weather twinsieees!!!

Yesterday's high was 7.1°C despite it being 2.3°C at noon. What a waste!

fires done in California; if they had gotten this a month ago, there would have been 0 wildfires or at least wouldn't have spread and been quickly put out

Got drenched in Manhattan last night around 10 pm. Peak rainfall rates were 0.36 inch/hr; high for late fall. Total for Central Park about 1.9”. Cleared up nicely for a good sunrise

Blizzard warnings today in the Midwest. Orange is blizzard warning, blue is winter weather advisory, pink is winter storm warning, brown is wind advisory. I'm too far north to see the blizzards but it should snow a little. Some places could get a lot of snow and high winds. Snow forecast for Chicago area has a large region of 8-12 inches. Winds are forecast to be 20-30mph tonight with gusts to 40. (32-48 and 64 km/h)

The fall arrival definition by SMHI is really shitty in southern Sweden, but the winter definition is pretty good; 5 days in a row with a mean at or below 0'C, which retroactively puts the start of winter on the first in the series (which is applies to all the seasons). The current arrival date for winter in Sweden. Stockholm's UHI technically missed out on winter by one day, so it's still fall there unlike on the map. Their city airport had -0.3'C on that day though.

Due to the streak of mild weather coming up, it's entirely possible for for winter in Stockholm UHI to arrive in January, over a month later than the city airport.
SMHI say that if there have been 5 (or 7 depending on which season) days of a season's weather then that's it, no matter what weather follows. So if Stockholm had an unprecedented cold wave in mid-October yielding 5 days in a row with winter means, then it would stay winter until spring.
I do feel the 5 days below 0.1'C means coalligns surprisingly well with my own perception of winter arrival here in Umeå.
However, I do feel that after a while, you kinda forget that it's been cold. After about two weeks of Vancouver "winter" weather, I forget all about the prior cold weather so if I were to make one change to the seasonal definitions, it would be to add the caveat that if there's maybe 10-15 days in a row of the previous season's weather, the seasonal change gets reverted.
A system with a X out of Y days need to belong to a season might be better as well, so instead of 5 consecutive days, 6 out of 7 days, or something along those lines might be better.

First ice day of the season here. The high was a frigid -2.3C, and the low -8.8C, also a new record low for the season. The average record low in November for the Artukainen station (since 2003) is -7.6C, so quite normal. Average amount of ice days in November is 3.6.

Coldest day of the season in my neighborhood. First time below -10'C except maybe once or twice while I was sleeping. Not fun biking with the dog. I don't know where my thermal trousers are either. I haven't experience prolonged cold like this ever in my life without any snow whatsoever. I feel like I'm in a literal cold desert such as Kazakhstan or Mongolia, especially in areas less open to the night sky since those don't even have frost.
We've had 9 winter days in a row now, during which time the 24h mean has been around -5'C. Way to ruin a record warm November.

Using that 5 days below 0 C definition here’s when our winter would start since 2010:
2010: December 6th 2011: January 22nd, 2012 2012: December 26th 2013: December 15th 2014: January 2nd, 2015 2015: January 5th, 2016 2016: December 17th 2017: December 11th 2018: Hasn’t started yet
Average: December 25th
Still really inaccurate for here. Maybe decent for someplace more stable. Just shows you can’t define seasons with arbitrary streaks and thresholds.

It ended up getting down to 27F last night, beating the forecast of 30F! A good bit of frost.
The temp overachieved a bit today, getting up to 59F. Patchy frost possible tonight with a forecast low of 36F.

First ice day of the season here. Same here. The high was at midnight and it didn't get above 26ºF (-3.3ºC) this afternoon. There was light snow for much of the day, but it only amounted to a dusting.

This winter is shaping up to be another pile of shit here. Really don't know why I expect winter here anymore. The east has experienced multiple rounds of record cold over the past decade coupled with a slew of above average snowfall seasons. Even Texas has seen record snowfall, yet the west keeps on warming at rates unseen in recorded times. You'd think the law of averages would eventually make its way over here, but nope!
