It looks like there won't be any play today at this rate. A shame that Australia will retain the Ashes after being annihilated in this test, rather than being 2-2 going into the final test.
They were also saved by weather at Lord's in 2019, which lead to them retaining the urn.

Unfortunate, but when England didn't turn up for the first two tests, it left very little margin for error or bad luck.
I'm mostly dissapointing that the weather ruined what was shaping up to be one of the best test series of all time.

I wouldn’t ordinarily revel in retaining the Ashes thanks to a very English washout, but in this instance I’m more than happy to lean right into it!! LOL Reset and try and pull together a much better performance at The Oval than the last 2 tests. Manchester now equals Sydney for days of test cricket abandoned due to rain…. Fitting really. People can whine about Cummin's leadership all they like but Stokes had every chance to win the Ashes and stuffed it.

Can't say the better team won this series. If it wasn't for Bairstow keeping like Wilko in the first 2 tests, the Ashes would have been back where they belong by right after Headingley.
I see the ECB have dropped the shittest climates for the 2027 Ashes, with tests at Edgbaston, Lord's, Trent Bridge, Ageas Bowl and The Oval.

Stokes needs to cop a bit of blame... declared too soon on day 1 of the first Test... should have kept batting and piled on the Bazball runs....then kept batting instead of declaring ( piling on the Bazball runs ) all the while knowing the forecast was for washouts on day 4 and 5 of this Test.

Seeing Piers Morgan seethe is easily the best part about this. However, sometimes he's right you know.

The Poms have blown up deluxe after rain saw the fourth Test in Old Trafford washed out to ensure Australia would retain the Ashes. The ever-polarising pundit Piers Morgan raged at the weather for denying England a strong chance of victory in the Test and the chance to keep the series alive. “It will be the greatest travesty in the history of Ashes cricket if the trampled, battered, beleaguered, Bazballed, desperate, white-flag-flying Aussies now avoid inevitable defeat and retain the urn because of bloody rain,” he wrote ahead of day four. He continued his rant, saying England was “robbed of the Ashes” and asking “Has there ever been a less-deserved retention of the Ashes?”

There has been a lot of chat about how the weather has always favoured England before, so I thought I'd have a look at rain affected tests since 2005.
Old Trafford 2005: England win this without rain Oval 2005: Probably remains a draw. If Australia win, it makes it 3-2 but England win the series anyway.
Cardiff 2009: Australia win without rain Edgbaston 2009: Probably a draw but England were the more threatening side. Series ends 2-2 and Australia retain.
Old Trafford 2013: Australia win without rain. Oval 2013: England only needed another 2-3 overs to win this. Series ends 4-1 England.
Lord's 2019: England win this without rain, take the series 3-2
Sydney 2021: Australia win this and the series 5-0.
Old Trafford 2023: England dominate this without rain, and it's 2-2 going to the Oval.
England may have been saved by weather during dead rubber tests in the 90s, but since 2005 the weather has helped the Australians at crucial moments more than it has helped England.

I can't wait for Warner to retire. I keep wanting him to prove critics wrong but I give up now. Just go away lol

This is his last Test I'd say... but this really has been one series too long in his case.

I concurr with the win % here.... England could set a +300 run chase which would be difficult to run down in the 4th innings of the match.

Stuart Broad has announced his retirement from test cricket. Genuinely surpised, he's still good enough to carry on for at least a couple more years, if not more.

Demolished the Aussies at the Oval in 2009 in his first Ashes series. Will probably do the same tomorrow. Warner golden duck and Carey mankad coming up.
