Sunset on Saturday off I 86 along the NY/PA border near Olean, NY. This is close to the Seneca indian reservation, and roughly the halfway point for my trip:

The river has started freezing in some parts of the lower, slow-flowing parts (barely above sea level here).

Mellieha bay in Malta on Saturday. In general, as far as the beaches are concerned - give me flat sandy beaches and wide sea views, cliffs that limit the views of the open sea and claustrophobic fjords are not my cup of tea.

Pretty ideal Thanksgiving weather, at least during the afternoon/evening, perfect for tossing the football around. High/low of 57/41 @ LGA and 57/31 @ Farmingdale with mostly cloudy conditions. Clouds building in now, expecting light rain tonight into tomorrow. Fall color still persistent in scattered spots, but generally fading like this

The river finally froze over! A bit surprising since it hasn't really been that cold so far. Note that only the eastern half ever freezes, the western half is kept warm by the water released from the power station along its banks (slightly visible in the second photo) and never freezes even in the coldest of cold snaps. South of the city, the entire width of the river freezes every winter.

I've been appauling at posting lately, and I haven't really been out much either since I've started using the hospital's tunnel system to get around the area now. I realized I can enter the hospital 100m from my apartment door and then walk all the way to campus through their tunnel system. Anyway, here's a photo dump from November. Mostly just a bunch of sunset and sunrise pics from my balcony... 10th of November: I remember some people talking about birches being able to keep their leaves unusually far into the season, but at least in Umeå the true winners are the hornbeams. They were pretty much completely green without any sign of fall whatsoever until we hit our first properly cold lows in the beginning of November, then they started showing signs of frost damage. The rest are a bunch of sunset and sunrise pics, and pics from my balcony. Kinda boring. Some of the sunsets and sunrises were truly phenomenal though, and I guess they show some kind of progression so hopefully they're worth looking through. November 5th: Some really interesting fog seen over the southern side of the river, same general area as the airport station. Also the last picture in this album that will contain any leaves in the natural vegetation. On the frosty (all the white stuff is frost) evening (afternoon really) on the 7th, the leaves had gone: November 10th had the most incredible sunset I've seen in years, perhaps in my life. I left my lectures at campus and as soon as I stepped outside I was met with this. The entire sky was an absolutely raging fire, not just towards the horizon but straight above and even on the other half of the sky as well! I tried to hurry home so I'd be able to watch the sunset from my balcony before it was too late. Unfortunately, a lot of the sunset had receded already when I did get home. It was still beautiful, it just wasn't as extreme as it had been 15 minutes earlier. We've actually had an astounding number of stunning sunsets and sunrises this November. This was three days later on the 13th (still no snow, only frost. We did have a dusting of snow a couple of days in October, but November didn't see any snow whatsoever until there was another dusting on the 22th and a major snowfall a couple days later on the 25th). And this was the sunrise on the 16th of November. I think it might be the most beautiful sunrise I've seen in my entire life. Sunrises don't tend to be as beautiful as sunsets do, but this one was stunning. A sunny set on the 18th. Some ice can be seen on the other side of the river where there's a shallow creating a pocket of very still water. Another one of the most beautiful sunrises I've seen in my life, on the 23rd, this time after a light dusting the evening before. And on the 25th we "finally" had the first real snowfall event. I only had to walk a total of 120 meters outside on my way to my lectures, and luckily I managed to keep the snow out of my shoes, which meant I could enjoy the beauty of the fresh snow without the discomfort that it brings. It was actually snowing lightly at the when this photo was taken, despite the sky being blue above me, and the moon being visible in the distance. Actually very pretty. And the day after that, yesterday, brought a crisp morning, and a beautiful evening.

The current noontime view from my balcony. Sun's getting real low... 12:54 today: River seems almost fully frozen in this spot too now.
