You seem to be the only one in the world with this data and you get upset when people don't know about your data. So why don't you make new weatherboxes? I think if you go further east in the Bay of Plenty, it will be dryer and sunnier as a general rule That's right till one gets past Whakatane - Opotiki is nearer the ranges and is significantly cloudier, as a resident poster on a NZ forum can attest (there's also data to support this of course).

Looked like the same guy was arguing over at CD... and I'm sick of these validation discussions anyway. Refer previous post. I am just trying to have discussions based on the best of my knowledge ok, which I think I have a general idea. There's no need to be angry with me.

I don't know why, but I'm getting the feeling that rwood thinks I'm annoying because I use the only available source instead of his hidden knowledge. I guess it's my fault for not having mastered clearvoyance yet.

Auckland gets a B from me. Very good climate for its latitude like most of NZ. Compare winters in Auckland with Wichita, KS and Richmond, VA which are on the same latitude... enough said

B. I certainly envy those lucky bastards who live there, but it could be a bit warmer and less rainy.

I guess it's my fault for not having mastered clearvoyance yet. Domt worry. Just don't use a lot of the data you find online, it's often inaccurate. Whakatane is sunnier than Tauranga. The knowledge isn't "hidden" - but some of it requires extensive research. NZ NIWA's CliFlo site has a lot of information but it is not very well integrated. And there is a very significant collection of printed publications that are not digitised (as yet). These include 30-year climate normals plus explanatory analysis over various periods. CliFlo normals exist, but minus any commentary or description of methodology. For the periods 1941-70, 1951-80 and 1961-90 for those 2 sites show Tauranga with 2285, 2217 and 2219 hours respectively; Whakatane with 2391, 2325 and 2319 hours. There are no normals for Tauranga cited for 1971-2000 or 1981-2010, presumably because of site issues. Monitoring and checking of sites in general was reduced after the late 1980s saw partial privatization, cost-cutting and the splitting Met Service of functions into two separate enterprises. Observations at the Tauranga site in the 1990s look inconsistent with older ones and too high - much later on they look too low. For Whakatane, there is a normal of 2286 for 1971-2000 site but that is polluted by observations from a 1990s site that was clearly unsatisfactory - local protests eventually led to the installation of an EWS in 2007. Proper comparison of the 2 towns can be resumed when Tauranga gets an EWS installed.

Hastings would do me. Very nice. Although if I lived in NZ, I would probably live on the South Island, it has arguably the best landscape in the world. Hastings is OK, though nearby Havelock North is a much pleasanter place. However Napier has better coastal scenery, more sun, fresher air and overall a slightly higher mean temperature. I agree, I just came back from a trip down to the Hawkes Bay and Hastings was awful! It was just such a depressing place to be so we left as soon as possible, Havelock and Napier are much nicer places.

I give it a B-, more sunshine would be a solid B.
